Jurgen Klopp has opened up about not wishing to “didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes” with his latest career move, resulting in some raised eyebrows after he joined Red Bull as Head of Global Soccer.
Known for his legendary tenure at Liverpool, Klopp exited Anfield and shrugged off the idea of an immediate return to managing.
Instead, he plunged into an advisory role with the energy drink firm, having a hand in their teams across Germany, Austria, and the USA.
Discussing his decision on the podcast ‘Einfach mal Luppen’, hosted by Toni Kroos and his brother Felix, Klopp expressed: “I certainly didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. And I personally love all my former clubs.
“I don’t know exactly what I could have done so that everyone would have been happy. It was always clear, well, it was clear to me, that I wasn’t going to do nothing at all,” and, “And that’s when the Red Bull story came up. So for me, it’s outstanding I have to be honest.”
Red Bull’s football venture, particularly their Leipzig outfit has climbed up to the Bundesliga elite, much to the dismay of numerous German footie fans who reckon the bevvy firm is splashing the cash in a bid for glory.
Klopp’s alliance with Leipzig has riled up scores from Borussia Dortmund’s camp – he bagged a couple of titles with them, but some reckon it’s mucked up his rep.
Klopp himself has moaned about clubs having multiple teams before, saying: “I’m a football romantic and I like tradition in football and all that stuff. In Germany, only two clubs sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ before the game – and that is Mainz and Dortmund,” reports the Mirror.
