Ian Wright had some choice words for Alan Shearer after he mocked him when Arsenal suffered a damaging defeat against Newcastle.
The iconic duo, who used to share the screen as analysts on BBC’s Match of the Day, were back together over the weekend as pundits for the Premier League’s official broadcast. The banter began before their teams faced off, with Arsenal heading to Newcastle for the clash.
Shearer, posting a photo on X with Wright, teased: “Together today for @premierleague tv @NUFC v @Arsenal we have promised no hard feelings whatever the result!!!” When the final whistle blew, it was Shearer sporting the grin as Newcastle emerged triumphant with a tight 1-0 win, courtesy of Alexander Isak’s goal. And Wright’s day took another hit post-match.
Shearer couldn’t resist sharing a clip showing Wright in a wheelchair, amid recovery from knee surgery, alongside the cheeky caption: “There were no hard feelings and Wrighty took it well!!!” reports the Mirror.
As Shearer chuckled at Wright being wheeled into the building, Wright retorted sharply with: “F*** off!” Not missing a beat, the Geordie legend quipped: “It was only 1-0.” That paved the way for Wright to continue his expletive-laden comeback, snapping: “F***ing shut your mouth.”
Shearer added: “We love you Wrighty, we love you,” while Wright pulled away with a serious expression on his face. This came following the Arsenal legend’s criticism of his old teams performance at St James’ Park.
Blasting the teams recent form, he dismissed the notion that captain Martin Odegaard’s absence is a legit excuse for their downturn. Wright said: “It really is quite frustrating to be ten games in and feeling like we feel now and that’s only because we know how tough it is to try and chase down Manchester City.
“Lacking attacking spark, the Arsenal side managed just one shot on target against Bournemouth and repeated the lacklustre display today. It’s not good enough. It’s not good enough for a team that is going for the title.”
He was adamant about the need for team improvement, stating: “There is a lot of work to be done in that dressing room. We can’t keep saying that we’re missing Martin Odegaard. We can’t keep saying that because we know we’re missing that.”
Wright, no doubt, is longing for a mood boost from the Gunners in what’s shaping up to be a challenging week ahead. Arsenal are set to head off to Inter Milan on Wednesday and will then contend with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge the following weekend.
