A trio of major high street retailers have announced store closures – and massive sales alongside it. Game, Homesense and WHSmith bosses confirmed that three stores are all closing in the next few weeks.
The former will be closing its standalone store in the Petergate Mall in Bradford, with signs on the doors confirming that the store will close on November 9. They are also having a 20% sale alongside it, with another sign confirming that this is off all “full price items” apart from hardware and digital.
Most branches of Game have already been closed and re-opened inside Mike Ashley-owned JD Sports stores throughout the country, however a spokesman for the shopping centre said: “We can confirm that Game will be closing and we will be announcing new fashion and beauty retailers in the coming weeks.”
Branches of Game also closed earlier this month in Nuneaton and Warwickshire, with stores in Witney, Oxfordshire and Plymouth, Devon also closing.
Following suit is WHSmith – another brand to close several stores already this year – with its Basingstoke branch closing early next year.
Closing on Saturday, February 1, 2025, the branch inside The Malls shopping centre has been there for 56 years, local news outlets claim. It has also been reported that sales are taking place in-store in a bid to shift as much stock as possible.
And lastly, Homesense, owned by TK Maxx bosses TJX International, ill close its Cross Keys Shopping Centre branch in Swindon early next year once the store’s lease expires. An exact date has not been revealed, but there are plans for a Lidl supermarket to replace it
James Mitchell, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re thrilled to announce our plans for a second store in Salisbury.
“The demand for our high-quality, best-value products continues to grow, and we’re eager to make shopping even more convenient for customers, with our new store ideally located to serve residents in the north and west of Salisbury.”
Speaking to the Salisbury Journal, TJX International spokesman said: “This year, TK Maxx proudly celebrates 30 years on the UK high street. Our shoppers love both TK Maxx and Homesense, and we continue to invest in communities nationwide through new store openings, relocations, and modernising our existing stores.
“Occasionally, we must make the difficult decision to close a store when its lease ends or cannot be renewed. In such cases, where possible, we offer roles to all associates in nearby Homesense or TK Maxx stores.
“We thank our loyal customers and associates and look forward to welcoming them to TK Maxx Salisbury in Cross Keys Arcade.
