A 23-year-old man has been convicted of murder after he used a dating app to entice a lorry driver to his death.
Mark Antonio White, from Covington in Georgia, was found guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and possession of a firearm following the shooting of 39-year-old Garcia Danielle Gaddis. White was sentenced to life imprisonment plus five years without the possibility of parole. In a press release, Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson said: “We pray that this verdict and the justice it serves provides some solace to this victim’s family and loved ones.
“The defendant took advantage of Mr. Gaddis and justice has been served.” Gaddis was killed on October 21, 2021, after being shot.
His body wasn’t discovered until three days later when police responded to a noise complaint. Police found Gaddis’ body with a single gunshot wound to the head in a Dodge Ram 1500 parked in a neighbourhood.
He was missing his mobile phone, wallet and car keys. Gaddis had been using the Tagged dating app on the last night he was seen alive, reports the Mirror US.
Gaddis had been messaged by a man who was later identified as White. Gaddis had arranged to meet White near the Little Suwanee Pointe neighbourhood, with White instructing Gaddis to collect him from the pool area. CCTV footage revealed Gaddis’ truck stopping to pick up a Black man with shoulder-length dreadlocks from the pool clubhouse’s car park just after 11pm.
After the truck was spotted driving towards the neighbourhood entrance at Tech Center Parkway, the man with dreadlocks was seen walking back to the pool clubhouse from the entrance. As police examined the crime scene, they discovered a shell casing in Gaddis’ truck cab that matched shell casings from a July 19, 2021 shooting.
In that incident, White was accused of firing at his ex-girlfriend and her mother. The mother had retained the shell casings and handed them over to the police when contacted about Gaddis’ case.
Mercedes Evans, Gaddis’ cousin, has paid tribute to the 39-year-old. She told NBC affiliate WXIA that Gaddis also worked as an Uber driver in his spare time from being a truck driver because he “loved meeting people”.
