Europa League facet concede ‘most embarrassing objective of all time’ seconds after kick-off

Danish Superliga champions FC Midtjylland conceded the ‘most embarrassing goal of all time’ in a 2-0 defeat to FC Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League.

The hosts were looking to bounce back from 4-0 thrashing against Rangers in matchday three with visitors Midtjylland on an unbeaten run so far in the competition.

It was all one way traffic though with the hosts opening the scoring after just 16 minutes. Half-time provided Midtjylland with the chance to re-group, but they lost all concentration and conceded a shocking goal just three seconds after kick-off.

A pass back from the centre-circle saw goalkeeper Elias Rafn Olafsson heavily pressed by the Steaua forwards with his resulting long kick deflecting off Daniel Birligea and into the back of the net.

It led to huge celebrations from the home bench with Steaua’s pressing game a clear tactic to try and intimidate young goalkeeper Olafsson who only became Midtjylland’s number one at the beginning of the season ousting experienced goalkeeper and club captain Jonas Lössl.

The goal was described as ‘the most embarrassing of all time’ by one user on social media and you’d be hard-pressed to find one that beats it.

The victory puts FCSB into the automatic qualifying spots for the last 16 while Danish champions Midtjylland remain in a comfortable position to qualify for the knockout play-off phase of the Europa League.

However, the Danish champions face two tough games against Eintracht Frankfurt and FC Porto next so could be in danger of crashing out if they don’t pick up points. Steaua meanwhile face another home tie against Greek giants Olympiacos before heading to German side Hoffenheim.
