Ian Wright has attracted criticism after a video went viral of him reacting to Gary Barlow‘s ‘massive’ son.

The commentator was left in stitches as he passed around his phone, showing his fellow Sky presenters a viral photo posted by the Take That star.

The singer, 53, barely reaches the shoulder of 24-year-old Daniel in a wholesome family snap which has now been viewed millions of times.

It was originally posted to mark Father’s Day in June 2023, but now memes are flooding the internet with jokes about the young man’s height.

And Wright has come under fire as exasperated football fans questioned his astonishment.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet Wright couldn’t get enough of the photo as he showed it to all the commentators and was barely able to contain his excitement.

Approaching Roy Keane, he said: ‘Have you seen the size of Gary Barlow’s son? Look at the size of him.’

Wright found it hilarious and tried to show Roy Keane, but he was left less than impressed

Fans couldn’t believe how small Barlow was made to look by his 25-year-old son, Daniel

However, the former Man United harman was unimpressed by the photo, before Wright said the same to Jill Scott, who was more reactive.

‘Shut up,’ she responded. ‘No way. How tall is he?’

Wright was struggling to contain his excitement as his unstoppable reaction continued.

‘Look at him,’ he added. ‘He should be playing basketball. He’s like a giant, look at the size of him. I can’t believe how big he is.

‘Jesus, I love that picture. He’s massive, he’s so big.’

Hitting back, ex-Lionesses captain Jill Scott retorted: ‘Maybe Gary Barlow has shrunk over the years.’

But, although the 24-year-old looks massive, in reality he is only a few inches taller than the average British man.

The average height for a man in the UK is 5’9, and 5’3 for a woman. Daniel, who is pursuing a career in medicine, is reported to stand at an impressive 6’2, but seems taller next to his father. Yet in reality, Barlow is only a few inches shorter than average at 5’7.

The former Take That star – who has three children with his wife of 25 years Dawn Andrews – tends to keep his personal life out of the spotlight.

Exasperated sports fans took to social media to express their frustration with the podcast’s discussion, with one saying: ‘More Roy Keane to be honest… uniniterested. Who cares how tall Gary Barlow’s son is, really?’

Jill Scott was equally taken aback and hilariously hinted that Barlow might have shrunk

Wright couldn’t stop chuckling to himself as he revealed his love for the viral photo

Another, James Wallis added: ‘For the love of God. The memes are one thing buy everyone is f*****g stupid.

‘The son is 6’2. Barlow is 5’7 o0r 5’9 something. This is why it seems so disproportionate. He’s not Greg Davies or Richard Osman.’

Another added: ‘Why’s everyone going crazy like he’s a giant’, while another sighed: ‘How has a picture of Gary’s son got this massive?’

The father-and-son duo had their arms around each other in the picture, posted shortly after Barlow celebrated his son’s achievement completing the Ironman competition, which saw him tackle a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run.

He wrote: ‘We just couldn’t be prouder of our boy – unbelievable amounts of training and determination – when you put in the work you get the results. Congratulations #ironman.’

But the photo went viral, with many commenting ‘Gary Barhigh’ below.

Memes compared the picture to a scene in the Christmas movie Elf, where human-sized Buddy struggles to fit in at the North Pole because everything is too tiny for him.

Another captioned ‘Gary Barlow’s son looking at all these memes about him on Twitter’ above a picture of a tiny model of a phone.

It was held in a hand which looks huge in comparison.

Another read: ‘Gary Barlow asking his son for a cuddle before bed’, showing the Take That star on stage with his arms spread wide above him.

Others posted photos of the celebrity with items which could be seen as clothing – such as a check pattern wall – captioned: ‘Gary Barlow standing in front of his son’s new cardigan.’

References were also made to how 6’2 Donald Trump’s son Barron – who is 18-years-old – also towers over him at an impressive height of 6’7.

Back in 2022, the singer shared another rare snap of his towering son for his 22nd birthday.

He wrote: ‘Happy 22nd Birthday to our Dan. We love you mate and you make us so proud every day’.

He has his arm around Daniel’s waist, with his head barely above his shoulder.

Barlow shares his three children with wife Dawn, a backup dancer who was on tour with Take That in 1995 and who he married in 2000.
