Interim Three Lions boss Lee Carsley has given a senior England call-up to Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, leaving some football fans on social media shocked.
The final international break of the 2024 footballing calendar is set to get underway after this weekend, with England in Nations League action against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. The two internationals will also be the final of Carsley’s tenure, with ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel primed to take over from the former Everton midfielder as the Three Lions permanent boss in January 2025.
Carsley will return to coaching the England U21’s, whom he helped to guide to glory back in 2023 at the European Under-21 Championship in Georgia and Romania. And for the last time, Carsley has named his final England squad, calling-up Southampton defender Harwood-Bellis which has left some fans scratching their heads.
Carsley has selected a trio of Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and Nick Pope as his goalkeepers. The interim boss has also named eight defenders, handing senior call-ups to Harwood-Bellis and Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, who has impressed of late for the Magpies.
The other defenders selected in the squad are Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis and Kyle Walker. In midfield, Carsley has called up Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Curtis Jones, Cole Palmer and Declan Rice.
And in attack, Anthony Gordon, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Dominic Solanke and Ollie Watkins have been selected. However, the most questionable selection from Carsley’s final England squad is the inclusion of Harwood-Bellis.
