“Anticyclonic gloom” is causing misery across the UK with Brits depressed by the lack of sunshine.
The weather pattern has been stuck on a loop of mist, fog and clouds with no yellow sun rays on the horizon. England and Wales has been dampened by drizzle but no real rain has fallen.
October 27 was the last time sunshine glowed across the UK. People aren’t expected to see sunny spells again until next Monday.
It comes as the weather is being dominated by high pressure – or an anticyclone, The Mail reports. The Met Office confirmed the phenomenon will see high pressure trapping an area of moisture near the earth’s surface.
Low cloud, mist and fog are formed as a result, which can’t lift and clear because the sunshine and winds are light – creating the dull conditions.
In a social media post on Monday, the Met Office said: “This week’s weather phrase: Anticyclonic Gloom.
“This can occur when high pressure traps a layer of moisture near to the earth’s surface, bringing a prolonged period of dull and cloudy weather, with mist and fog also possible. How would you describe today’s weather?”
One user replied: “I mean the lack of wind and rain is great but the heavy gloomy sky, my God is so depressing. It’s been the same for a full week and your forecast is the same all this week too. Just awful, claustrophobic almost.”
Another said: “Felt that claustrophobia for a few days. Never realised not being able to see the sky for so long would have that effect.”
While one added: “We have a summer with little or no anti-cyclonic weather and when we do it’s in November and depressingly dull.”
Anticyclonic gloom, also known by meteorologists as a ‘dirty high’, typically moves away after a week, but this particular episode could stick around for two weeks.
And the Met Office issued its update at the start of the week, meaning the gloom could persist until November 18.
