‘City of the Century’ is burnt-out metropolis with deserted properties and empty church

This is a selection of images taken in a largely abandoned metropolis once dubbed The City of the Century.

Although not technically a ghost town with a population just shy of 70,000 residents, Gary in Indiana has nevertheless lost more than 40% of its population in the last 30 years. And their departure has left more than 30% of homes in the city vacant. While one of its claims to fame is that it houses the birthplace of Michael Jackson, on the flipside it was also named murder capital of the US in the mid-90s, with 129 murders reported in a single year.

Thanks to urban explorer Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America, the Daily Star is able to show you some the neglected structures that remain around the city.

Although Matthew said the idea of chronicling the ruins of an entire city is daunting, his collection of snaps gives an interesting snapshot of a once-thriving area.

Matthew is an avid trekker to abandoned sites across the world and has a regular podcast where he tells the story of the ruins he visits, including this one on Gary.

You can follow his work on Facebook and Instagram, or by visiting his website. Check out the pics below, see how many you recognise through the tears.
