The UK has turned into a nation of bog roll bandits who love to brag about snapping up loo paper in bulk deals.
Bagging bargain toilet tissue or cleaning products is the third most popular boast among shoppers who love a special offer. It comes after Covid stockpilers were slammed in the pandemic for loading trolleys with loo paper and leaving others caught short.
The top gloat among Brits is making a tidy saving when negotiating new contracts or bills, such as gas, leccy, broadband or insurance. While researchers found our second favourite money-saver to crow about was netting a budget holiday or cheap flights.
Other common brags include snapping up supermarket promotions, such as buy one, get one free deals, “upcycling” tatty furniture to avoid forking out for new, and claiming to be shrewd after moving into “an up and coming area”.
More than a third of the 2,000 UK adults surveyed said they got a bigger buzz from telling others about a cracking deal than pleasure from the product itself.
One in 10 delight in regaling neighbours about their savvy savings as they try to keep up with the Joneses.
Over two in five get most satisfaction from finding a discount on something they had already planned to purchase, with almost as many keen on buying in bulk.
And rather than splurging cash on festivals, lairy holidays or boozy nights out, more than half of Gen Z youngsters and Millennials would rather save on utility bills by installing solar panels.
A quarter of respondents from all age groups want energy-efficient appliances, with half claiming they feel “immense joy” from scoring savings on big-ticket items like tech and designer gear.
Susan Wells, director of EV and solar at smart home device firm Hive, which held the study, said: “Brits love finding a great deal on things they already plan to buy, and it’s even more rewarding when those savings come with a positive environmental impact.”
