Chido Obi-Martin is making waves in Manchester United’s academy, netting his fourth goal in as many U18s games since joining this summer.
The young forward made a splash on his home debut in October, scoring a 15-minute hat-trick in a 6-0 demolition of Nottingham Forest, and continued his scoring streak with a composed finish in the team’s 3-0 victory over Everton on Saturday.
Snapped up from Arsenal in July, the 16-year-old had to wait until the end of September for his move to be approved by the Premier League. Obi-Martin has a promising future ahead, having scored an impressive 32 goals in 21 U18 matches for the Gunners.
His performances earned him appearances for Arsenal’s U19s and U21s. Despite their efforts, Arsenal couldn’t persuade him to sign a new contract, leading to United swooping in for the talented youngster, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Obi-Martin made his international debut for Denmark Under-18s in September, scoring in his first match against Norway’s Under-17s. He also featured for United’s U21s against PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League International Cup on the same day the first team triumphed over Leicester 5-2 in the League Cup.
His latest goal, against Everton, came just six minutes into the game. He was later substituted for Gabriele Biancheri, another rising star, after 71 minutes.
Tyler Fletcher, son of United star Darren, also started the match. Jack Fletcher, Tyler’s twin brother, has been training with the first team this season and has made it to the last three Premier League matchday squads. He was also on the senior bench for the cup victory over Leicester.
Obi-Martin is expected to follow in his footsteps under the guidance of incoming head coach Ruben Amorim. The U18s maintained their top spot in the Premier League North table after further goals from Jim Thwaites and Bendito Mantato followed Obi-Martin’s opener on Saturday.
The side boasts an impressive record, having won all nine of their matches, scoring 43 goals and conceding only four.
