Locals in some areas of Spain have resorted to totally wrapping their cars in plastic and tying them to lamposts ahead of more ‘extreme’ weather.
Areas in the South of the country were battered by unusually heavy seasonal rain in the past few weeks, resulting in severe damage to property – including cars – and the deaths of hundreds of people. And with more heavy rain forecast, some residents in Malaga have planned ahead – by securing their cars with cling film and ropes.
In one picture shared on X, formerly Twitter, a grey Mercedes is seen fixed to a post with jump ropes and wrapped in plastic sheeting. The poster wrote: “In Malaga, Spain, there is a red alert for a possible DANA like the one that occurred in Valencia, leaving more than 250 dead and dozens missing. Well, one person had no better idea than this to ‘protect’ his car…”
The red alert in Malaga warns of ‘extreme risk’ from ‘severe’ rainfall between 10am and 11.59pm on Wednesday, and covers the Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce and Axarquia regions, Olive Press reports.
People have been told avoid all unnecessary journeys, while schools across Malaga province have been suspended.
Preventative measures announced by the Junta de Andalucia include the ‘preventative evacuation’ of people who live along banks of the Guadalhorce river, namely people removed from their homes in Alora, Cartama, Alhaurin de la Torre, Pizarra, Cerralba and Malaga.
It comes after an Irish expat in Valenica who helped in the cleanup told of the post-flood horror there.
Benen Wann, 27, was shocked by what he saw when the floodwaters subsided, leaving a graveyard of vehicles, mangled children’s playgrounds and, of course, victims.
“Bodies are still being recovered,” the bank customer service worker told the Daily Star after a day of trawling through the devastation, which he likened to something from post-apocalyptic movie The Road.
