Drivers may very well be fined for breaking Highway Code over steering wheels

Drivers are being warned that doing up their steering wheels could see them break UK law. Advice has been issued to motorists who like to dress up their steering wheels with things like fluffy covers.

It comes as part of a general warning advising motorists to think carefully about ‘personalising’ their car. Such habits are popular on TikTok, with videos generating huge hits.

But alterations could see you breach the Highway Code. And you could end up with points on your licence and even fines.

Car personalisation has become a bit of a craze.TikTok has seen an influx of videos showcasing inventive ways to customise your car.

However, experts at insurance broker ChoiceQuote have raised concerns, warning that certain viral driving accessories could lead to trouble and even make you a dangerous driver in some situations. Phil Leese, a motor trading specialist at ChoiceQuote, commented to say: “Adding car accessories to your vehicle is a great way to not only personalise your car to your own style but it can add extra convenience and storage.

“Some of these car accessories that have gained popularity on TikTok may not be worth the investment as they could lead to distracted driving which could result in penalty points, fines and invalidating insurance.” He further advised: “Drivers should be cautious when adding accessories to their vehicles as they might not be as safe and aid the driving experience as they thought. If you are unsure if a car accessory is distracting it is best to avoid adding the accessory altogether.”

Light up window decorations

A TikTok creator has amassed 25.2 million views and 3.8 million likes for a video showcasing the fitting of a light-up window decoration in her car’s quarter window. TikTok users were quick to highlight the potential danger, with one commenter pointing out “now you can’t see your blind spot”.

Despite the allure of enhancing vehicles with such light features, insurance specialists at ChoiceQuote strongly advise against it, cautioning that while it may give a vehicle a unique flair, it also presents a considerable safety hazard and could distract other motorists, possibly leading to collisions.

Furry steering wheel cover

Adding a cover to your steering wheel is an easy way for motorists to customise their ride. However, ChoiceQuote cautions drivers about excessively fluffy and decorative steering wheel covers that do not provide sufficient grip.

While these accessories might add a touch of style and comfort, the plush fabric could undermine your command of the wheel, potentially causing safety concerns. The Highway Code clearly states that if you lose control of your vehicle due to a slippery grip, it could be deemed as dangerous driving, which carries the risk of accruing up to 11 points on your licence.

Hence, when choosing a steering wheel cover, it’s important to opt for one that ensures an adequate grip.

Footwell car LED lights

LED lights are increasingly being used to add a touch of luxury and personality to vehicles, creating an impressive ambiance for passengers. However, drivers should be mindful of the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 when installing these lights.

The regulations stipulate that LED lights must not distract or dazzle other road users. Red LEDs are only allowed at the rear of the vehicle, white lights at the front, and blue lights are reserved for emergency vehicles.

Additionally, drivers need to ensure their LED lights meet MOT test standards and may require approval from their insurance provider. Non-compliance with these rules could result in penalties, fines, and even the seizure of the vehicle in severe cases.
