A worker stumbled upon a human head washed up on a Florida tourist beach, triggering a major police investigation into the gruesome find.
The grim discovery was made by an employee raking the beach on Key Biscayne around 8.30am on Tuesday morning. After dialling 911, it was confirmed that the head was indeed human. Miami-Dade Police Department cordoned off the section of beach where the head was found, using tape and traffic cones to block off the area as they initiated their investigation.
The identity of the individual remains unknown at this time. Miami-Dade police homicide detectives are now on the case, with the Medical Examiner working alongside them to identify the individual, according to NBC Miami.
A police spokesperson stated: “Detectives are on scene and are working with the Medical Examiner to determine the identity of the individual,” The shocking discovery has left local residents deeply unsettled.
Local resident Bahman Amini told CBS News: “You see all kinds of things here but nothing like this, like we saw this morning. The head of a person.”
Another local expressed their disbelief to WPLG, saying: “This is my typical route. Our neighbourhood is very safe. We have our children here; our children play on these beaches and it’s just beyond belief.”
While taking her regular stroll, a beachcomber was unaware of the unfolding drama until her usual path was abruptly shut down by an officer. The woman, who chose not to reveal her name, recounted to NBC10: “He signalled with his finger that I needed to turn around immediately. I understood the assignment.”
She described her reaction to the discovery as “quite disturbing.”
