Liverpool star sends Thomas Tuchel ‘ambitions’ message as England supervisor faces problem

Curtis Jones believes incoming England boss Thomas Tuchel is good enough to win the World Cup.

Tuchel will take charge of the Three Lions at the start of 2025, having agreed to replace Gareth Southgate. He will be under pressure to succeed where Southgate ultimately failed – and end England’s long wait for a major trophy.

But Liverpool star Jones reckons the German has it in him to lead the Three Lions to glory by winning the biggest prize of all. Jones said: “I don’t want to put any more pressure on him than what he has probably already got, or what he has probably already seen.

“But he’s won the Champions League [with Chelsea], he’s known as one of the best as well. It’s a different type of challenge, but I’d like to think he’s come in with the same ambitions. And his style of play is going to suit all the lads as well. Time will tell, but hopefully, yeah [he can win the World Cup].”

The uncapped Jones admits he’s already desperate to be part of the England squad for that tournament. He added: “I don’t even need to say it, as a player that’s the stuff you want to be involved and a part of.

“The team is so exciting now, plus there’s more young lads who are coming through. If I’m playing games and I’m doing well and scoring goals, and getting assists, hopefully I’m part of the squad.”

Interim manager Lee Carsley‘s side face Greece away from home on Thursday evening before welcoming the Republic of Ireland to Wembley on Sunday in a bid to win their Nations League group in his farewell fixtures.

Tuchel will begin work on January 1 next year ahead of the qualification process for the following year’s FIFA World Cup finals, due to be staged in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
