A Tesco customer got way more than they bargained for thanks to an online delivery glitch. Stories of weird substitutions have been a regular occurrence since online supermarket deliveries became popular. From Turkeys being switched for sausage on Christmas Eve to toilet rolls swapped for newspapers – it’s always funny when it happens to someone else.
But the latest one is something we should all be jealous of rather than laugh at. Come by way of the Tesco subreddit on social media site Reddit, one customer who ordered a single box of After Eight Dark Mint chocolates was given far, far more than they could have hoped for.
Taking to Reddit to post about it, a user claiming to be a member of staff showed an image of the internal system showing that the substitutions for a £2.50 300g box of the chocolates should be replaced by one 200g box of Lindt Lindor Dark Mint Chocolate Truffles price at 62p… and 10 120g boxes of Quality Street Matchmakers Cool Mint Chocolate boxes prices at £1.88 each.
For those keeping track, the swap is 7.8 times more than the original value of the product the shopper wanted.
In reply to the image captioned “nice substitution for the customer,” one person wrote: “Those new Lindt Dark Mint are amazing though. They’re like a posh After 8. Currently on offer in Morrisons with a More Card for £4.50 a box if anyone wants to give them a go. Also, the Tiramisu ones are epic but I’ve only seen them in the Lindt shops.”
Another wrote: “10 boxes? Hell yeah,” and a third added: “When the picker has the same surname as the customer .” Interestingly, one staffer claimed that they don’t actually follow what the screen suggests when it gives a replacement.
They wrote: “I work in a large Tesco store on dot.com and I’m incredibly particular with the things I sub. I almost never follow the suggested item and always pick something that I think is more appropriate.
“I have excellent feedback on my picks so it much better working. This sub is ludicrous and I’d have hit the ‘bad sub’ option and picked something more appropriate. We had run out of XL frozen Turkeys last week and our suggested sub was 4 small frozen Turkeys. Absolutely not.”
