When it comes down to names, however, John, Jon or Johnny were No. 1, closely followed by Paul and Simon, with Sara the top trumper among women.
Famous Johns include the aptly-named Johnny Rotten, Johnny Depp, John Wayne, John Cleese, and John Travolta.
In the Viz comic, a character called Johnny Fartpants can’t stop pumping – with his gaseous emissions so powerful they enable him to ‘fly’ and even to accidentally knock down houses. In the comic, Johnny exists on a ’strict pump diet’ of beans and cabbage water.
Johnny Porter, 50, of Nottingham, said he has always had a ‘wind problem’.
The gardener said: “For as long as I can remember I’ve always been the gassiest person I know.
“My parents used to laugh about it when I was a teenager, and it seems I’ve just never grown out of it – it’s a part of me.”
He added: “My wife used to find it really annoying, and used to get up and leave the room when I let one off, but she’s so used to it now she barely bats an eyelid.”
According to the NHS, it’s normal to pass gas between 5 and 15 times a day.
The study also found that the favourite words to describe a bottom burp was ‘fart’, which 60% said they used to describe the gaseous emission.
Others include trump with 16%, break wind, with 9%, parp, with 2%, and bottom burp with 1%.
A spokesperson for Branston Beans said: “These findings remind us that while farting is universal, our attitudes towards it are as varied as the nation itself, whether you’re a ‘fart’, ‘wind’ or ‘trump’ person!”
“Importantly for baked bean lovers, more than half of the nation – 55% – admit that their frequency of flatulence doesn’t change, even after consuming ‘the musical fruit’.”
