Motorists warned of ‘harmful’ de-icing hack that carries advantageous as much as £2,500 if caught

Drivers have been hit with a stark warning over a risky winter driving practice that might see them forking out fines of up to £2,500 and risking serious road collisions.

Freezing conditions expected across parts of the UK next week will likely see motorists scrambling to de-ice their screens. Yet, wiper blade retailer Windscreen Wipers has issued a strong reminder, imploring drivers to steer clear of ‘portholing’, a time-saving technique. The experts cautioned: “A tempting but dangerous habit is portholing. This is when drivers only clear a patch of the windscreen, a ‘porthole’, to look through when they are driving.

“This is dangerous and can land you with a hefty fine of £60 rising to £2,500 if your driving is deemed to be dangerous.

“Make sure that you always clear your entire windscreen before setting off.”

It’s all too common for drivers to curse the sight of iced-over glass first thing in the morning, leading some to just scrape off enough to peer through before jetting off, reports the Express.

This half-hearted approach slashes visibility, hiking up blind spots and multiplying the chances of bumping into other road users.

To dodge a whopping £2,500 penalty and ensure a safe ride, folk behind the wheel are advised to allocate decent time to sweep their screens entirely clear.

Windscreen Wipers also warned drivers of the dangers of reaching for that kettle to melt away ice; this quick fix can cause serious damage.

Their say: “Using water of any temperature to de-ice windscreens is not advised.

“Hot water will cause the glass to expand, which can result in it cracking or even shattering, and cold water can freeze on top of existing ice and frost. Both methods can damage your windscreen, sometimes beyond repair.”

For those in a hurry to defrost their screen, Windscreen Wipers recommends grabbing a can of de-icer instead. Priced from just about £2, you can pick up this speedy solution in most car accessory spots or local supermarkets.

This de-icing wizardry makes use of special chemicals that lower the ice’s freezing point right down, causing it to disappear at the blink of an eye while keeping re-freezing at bay.

And if you’re feeling like a bit of DIY, mix some vinegar or isopropyl rubbing alcohol with water, whack it in a spray bottle, and give your icy windscreen a good spritz.
