Harry Kane has poses with his infamous ‘stuff of nightmares’ statue which has been hidden in storage for five years.
The England captain’s bronze ‘lookalike’ has been given a permanent home at The Peter May Centre in Walthamstow, east London, home to his boyhood club Ridgeway Rovers. He said: “A real proud moment for me to go back to where my life in football began and unveil a statue.
“I hope it helps inspire the next generation to work hard and believe in themselves.”
But social media wags were in stitches over the £7,200 statue, which was commissioned in 2019 by council bosses in Waltham Forest where the former Tottenham ace was born. They put it in storage because they could not find an apt location for it.
One said: “Has there ever been a footballer statue that actually looks like the person it’s for?” Another said: “They’ve made him look like a combo of Beavis and Butthead.”
One more chimed in: “Sorry, who is that?” Kane used to train at the centre when he was just five-years-old.
He said: “I’m really impressed with it, it’s pretty cool to see. It’s quite humbling knowing there’s going to be loads of kids walking past it and hopefully it inspires others.”
Kane was back in action for the Three Lions on Sunday evening against the Republic of Ireland. The Bayern star fired England into the lead – the first of five in Lee Carsley’s final game – after Jude Bellingham won a penalty after a beautiful game from Kane.
