Angry Tesco staff have launched a petition to change the in-store music. Seemingly at the end of their tether with “the monotonous cycle of royalty-free”, one bloke claiming to have been working there for more than two years has taken matters into his own hands to get the music ditch.
Likening it to “psychological torture” when posting it on Reddit, the petition has only racked around 50 signatories so far. However, the staffer behind it stated: “This limited soundtrack, which rarely varies, is played alongside relentless in-store ads, far more than I have heard in any other supermarket.
“We are forced to endure the same tracks multiple times each day, and in the two years of my employment, the playlist has changed only once. This constant repetitiveness isn’t just tiresome, it’s detrimental to our mental health.
“The incessant repetition of music, combined with aggressive in-store advertising, makes the work environment unpleasant and stressful – a sentiment echoed by many of my colleagues and several discussions found in online forums.”
He goes on to claim that while he is “not demanding silence” he would like a “mindful” selection of in-store music instead.
The petition sparked other similar stories of horror relating to Tesco’s music choice in-store, with one recalling a time during the 2018 World Cup when one store played the same songs on repeat over and over – including a day of “nothing but that irritating Vindaloo song on repeat over and over all day”.
They added: “I had a nine hour shift that day and I wanted to stab myself in the ears by hour two.”
And in a music-related Tesco staff story that Tesco bosses can’t control, one raged: “I once did a shift on basket till. The entire shift, I had a brass band behind me. Playing the same few songs. For eight f**king hours”.
