Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new decree approving the use of nuclear weapons “under threat”. According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Putin’s new decree to approve a new nuclear doctrine.
Called the Fundamentals of State Police in the Sphere of Nuclear Deterrence, it claims, according to TASS: “nuclear weapons (NW) are an extreme measure to protect the sovereignty of the country. At the same time, due to the emergence of new military threats and risks, Russia needed to clarify the parameters that allow the use of NW.” The document is an update to the June 2020 version, which was adopted in 2010, which is part of Putin’s apparent attempt to save face while his invasion of Ukraine edges closer to 1,000 days.

On the Approval of the Fundamentals of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the Field of Nuclear Deterrence
For the purpose of improving the state policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence, I decree:

Approve the attached Fundamentals of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence.

Declare as having lost force Presidential Decree of the Russian Federation of June 2, 2020, No. 355 “On the Fundamentals of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of nuclear deterrence” (Collected Legislation of the Russian Federation, 2020, No. 23, article 3623).

This Decree shall enter into force on the day of its signing.
