Suffolk bakery stuns prospects with eye-watering value of mince pies

Millions of Britons will pick up a packet of mince pies for a couple of pounds to enjoy with a cup of tea while cuddled up on the sofa this Christmas.

Even upmarket stores Waitrose and Marks & Spencer are selling their premium boxes of the baked goods, made with Cognac, at £4.

But Pump Street Bakery, located in the village of Orford, Suffolk, is charging a whopping £25 for just six pies.

This means that each mince pie costs £4.16 – more expensive than even the most premium stores.

Pump Street say they take ‘great care’ in making the mince pies and want to bring the ‘best possible’ products to their customers.

The bakery says they use pastel de nata molds to shape the pastry and that their mincemeat is made in-house with fresh apples with High House Farm in Woodbridge.

It also incorporates Vostizza currants which they use in their Eccles cakes, along with raisins, sultanas and lemon, orange peel, spices and brandy – however, they do not specify which type or brand of the alcohol they use.

They finish their description by saying that they can be served ‘slightly warm with double cream or clotted cream’.

However, in December 2023, Pump Street were selling the same mince pies at £18 for six, meaning they’ve increased the price by £7 this year.

The booze-filled desserts have increased by a whopping 38.8 per cent since last Christmas.

Time Out magazine rated them three out of five stars, commenting that while they looked appealing, the pastry is ‘too short, and extreme crumbliness is unavoidable’.

Pump Street also only send their products via an overnight Courier service, which will set customers back a further £8, bringing the total cost to £33 if you were to get them delivered

The company said the mince pies will last up to five days at room temperature and ‘much longer’ in the freezer.

The bakery – which has been painted a picturesque baby pink – was founded in November 2010 by father and daughter Chris and Joanna Brennan.

The shop is located in a 15th-century building on Orford’s Market Square, which was previously unoccupied for 20 years.

This comes as consumer group Which? tasked an expert panel to give their verdicts on which mince pies you should be popping into your shopping basket, and which ones are best left on the shelf.

The judge line-up was made up of four baking experts: Bake Off: The Professionals 2022 winner Nathan Rave, Great British Bake Off 2010 winner Edd Kimber, award winning baker and food writer Dan Lepard and pastry chef and author Shaheen Peerbhai.

Which? rated the Waitrose No.1 Brown Butter Mince Pies with Cognac the best buy recommendation, whereas Tesco Finest All Butter Pastry Mince Pies and Asda Exceptional Luxury Mince Pies were ‘less impressive’.
