Met Office snow forecast warns of 530-mile deep freeze – see full record of cities affected

Brits are on high alert as the Met Office slaps a whopping 530-mile snow warning across the country. The UK is shivering through a bone-chilling cold snap after a mild start to November, thanks to polar air sweeping south.

It’s set to continue into the weekend, with mercury plunging below zero in many areas. Scotland felt the freeze with a nippy -11.2°C at Braemar in Aberdeenshire, while Nottinghamshire saw snowdrifts up to 12cm deep. The Met Office has issued yellow warnings for more snow and icy conditions lasting until Sunday. A fresh alert for snow and ice kicked in today, stretching nearly the full length of Britain from 12pm until 10am Saturday, flagging up tricky travel conditions.

“Wintry showers and icy patches are expected this evening and overnight, perhaps leading to some travel disruption,” the Met Office cautions. Today’s forecast warns: “Wintry showers are expected to gradually move south this afternoon, then feeding inland from Irish Sea and North Sea coasts at times this evening and overnight, especially through the Cheshire Gap to affect parts of the Midlands and north Wales.””

The Met Office warn more snow could be on the way

“Where these occur 2-5cm of fresh snow is possible, with this most likely on ground above 100m. Icy stretches are expected to form on untreated surfaces during Thursday evening and overnight into Friday morning as temperatures drop below freezing, especially following any showers.”, reports the Mirror.
