Football supporters on social media were left scratching their heads after Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi was not sent off for a shocking challenge on Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.
Just 22 minutes into Leicester and Chelsea’s clash, Ndidi was given a yellow card for his tackle on Palmer, which left the Blues star on the ground in pain. The Leicester midfielder directly landed his studs on Palmer’s ankle with some force, a challenge many would expect to be a straight red.
However, referee Andrew Madley only gave Ndidi a yellow card – much to the shock of fans on social media. One fan wrote on X after seeing the nasty challenge: “2 red card incidents on Palmer this season now that are yellows. Premier League not protecting their best asset. Don’t deny the next generation of kids the Cole Palmer celebration. Do the right thing now @FA_PGMOL.”

A second wrote: “Only VAR clowns could look at this challenge on Cole Palmer and not see a stone-cold red for Ndidi. Unbelievable.” A third said: “Including the Martinez tackle, that’s now two red card challenges on Cole Palmer that haven’t been given.”
A fourth commented: “That foul by ndidi on Cole Palmer was overlooked? No way that isn’t a red card.” A fifth said: “That challenge on Cole Palmer by Ndidi is an absolute shocker and should have been a red.” And a sixth wrote: “That ndidi foul is a red all day come on.”

It is the second time this season Palmer has been left feeling the full force of a challenge that has not resulted in a red card, with the Chelsea star also suffering from a nasty tackle by Lisandro Martinez prior to the November international break.
During the clash, which finished 1-1 at Old Trafford, controversy peaked in injury time when Martinez produced the challenge on Palmer, with the Argentine recklessly hoisting his boot into his opponents knee at studs-height with the ball already gone. Referee Jones deemed it a bookable offence, flashing a yellow – with the Premier League later backing up Jones’ decision.
A Premier League statement read: “The referee issued a yellow card to Martinez for a challenge on Palmer. VAR checked for a potential red card and confirmed the referee’s call of no red card, deeming that it was a reckless challenge.”
