The ‘subsequent 9/11’ will probably be stopped by AI cameras and laser beams, says US authorities

The US government is reportedly stepping up defence measures against outside threats, implementing AI cameras and laser beams to protect the White House.

The Department of Defence (DOD) has announced a new AI camera system that can quickly identify unauthorised aircraft approaching restricted areas. Washington DC’s National Capital Region (NCR) – where the White House and Supreme Court are located – has already started a rollout of the new system. The new AI-based visual recognition system is spread throughout the NCR and will be monitored by the Eastern Air Defence Sector in Rome, New York.

“You have an extended range, you can see further,” said Air Force Master Sgt. Kendrick Wilburn, discussing the new system’s effectiveness in a DOD press release. “We went from standard definition to high definition. The fidelity is incredible.

“On the infrared side, you have multiple enhanced features like IR colorization. For example, you could utilize a RGB [red, green, blue] filter to where … the object that we’re tracking sticks out via heat signature.”

The new security system seeks to prevent the horrors of events like September 11, 2001, where a hijacked airliner hit the Pentagon on the same day two planes hit the World Trade Centre in New York City.

“The system itself tries to identify what it believes the target to be, and then the operator can assess whether to override it or fine-tune it,” Wilburn added, admitting there were some growing pains.

He added: “The camera itself is amazing. We were able to acquire small targets such as a bird flying all kinds of patterns. It locked onto it and held that lock. With the legacies [cameras], you’d have a harder time getting the system to do that.”
