Champions League star left misplaced for phrases after the ‘worst miss in soccer historical past’

A Champions League star was left red-faced after a horror miss.

Ivan Martin was left wondering what could have been when he spooned the ball over the crossbar with an open net beckoning. Girona had travelled to Austria to face Sturm Graz in the early kick-off during Wednesday evening’s Champions League action.

Former Tottenham star Bryan Gil had danced through the Austrian defenders, and pulled the ball back across goal where Martin was waiting one yard from the goal. But instead of rolling the ball into the net, he ballooned it over the bar.

“Ivan Martin! That might be the worst miss in football history,” one fan fumed. While a second said: “How on earth did Ivan Martin not score that for Girona?”

“Ivan Martin with the most horrible miss I’ve ever seen…If Girona don’t get the win this is 100% Ivan Martin’s fault. If i was the owner I’d terminate his contract,” a third fumed. And another added: “This might just be the miss of the season!”

Ivan Martin could hardly believe it

The Austrian Bundesliga pace-setters would soon capitalise on Martin’s mistake – netting the opener through Arsenal youth academy graduate Mika Biereth. Biereth, who was born in England but represents Denmark, was quickest to the ball after Paulo Gazzaniga parried a wayward shot.

Biereth’s goal secured the Austrian side their first Champions League win since 2001. Sturm Graz have now moved above Girona in the Champions League table, thanks to their superior goal difference.

Girona’s sole Champions League win this season came on Matchday Two over ŠK Slovan Bratislava.
