Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) on Wednesday said Americans should brace themselves for economic hurt when President-elect Donald Trump returns to the White House and implements tariffs on imported goods.
“We are going to be the ones that are suffering, and for those that thought inflation was bad, even though it has come down, even though that it is honestly cooled off here a lot quicker than it cooled off in the rest of the world, let me just tell you, it’s time to buckle up, buttercup, because it is about to be on and popping if he for some reason he gets half of this done,” Crockett told MSNBC’s Chris Hayes.
“Right now, looking at the henchmen that he is trying to put into his administration, we are on track to see a lot of these negative things impact our economy,” the congresswoman added.
Trump said Monday that one of his first executive orders on his first day back in the Oval Office will slap a 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada and an extra 10% tariff on those from China.
Mainstream economists, though, have warned the tariffs — alongside Trump’s vow to deport millions of undocumented immigrants — will send inflation soaring. Bosses at both Walmart and Lowe’s have also warned of price increases at their outlets.
