Dead rats and pigeons being utilized by inmates to ‘smuggle medicine’ into crisis-hit jail

Inmates at HMP Deerbolt, a jail in crisis, are smuggling drugs hidden inside dead rats and pigeons, according to a whistleblower.

The prisoners retrieve packages from the deceased animals that have been thrown over the fences.

Last week, The Sun reported that 38 inmates at the prison collapsed within 24 hours due to drug overdoses. Additionally, several staff members have resigned due to inappropriate relationships with inmates or for smuggling contraband into the facility.

Violence is reportedly rampant at the County Durham site. A whistleblower stated: “The prison is in chaos — it’s total anarchy with the management seemingly giving up.

“There are all sorts of drugs in there. The new ruse they’re using to get stuff in is to hide it inside dead animals. It is truly revolting. Prisoners’ associates get rats and pigeons, either killing them or finding a dead one.

An insider claims the prison has hired a safety officer to tackle the issues of drugs and violence

“They take their innards out and put packages in there and sew them up before tossing them over fences into the prison grounds. You never know what’s in the drugs. A lot of it is down to boredom.

“There are a lot of men locked up for 22 hours per day because there are not enough staff to keep them occupied.”

An insider revealed that the prison has hired a safety officer to tackle the issues of drugs and violence, and more staff members breaking rules are being caught.

The Ministry of Justice commented: “We’ll get a grip to bear down on drugs and violence in jails.”
