Football followers ‘cannot consider their eyes’ as Chelsea awarded rarely-seen free-kick

Football fans couldn’t believe their eyes after Chelsea were awarded an indirect free-kick inside the Aston Villa box.

Villa defender Pau Torres had passed the ball back to shot-stopper Emi Martinez – who picked up the ball. FA rules state an indirect free-kick is awarded if “it has been deliberately kicked to the goalkeeper by a team-mate”.

However, it’s seldom seen at the top level of football – and it left quite a few football fans stumped on social media. One fan joked: “Ngl, this is my first time throughout all my life seeing this kind of free kick inside the box , I didn’t know that can happen but anything is possible with Chelsea!”

“Did I just see a free-kick from inside the box,” a second shared. While a third said: “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a free-kick inside the box. Aston Villa had 10 people in net lol!”

“An inside the box indirect free kick feels like Premier League scorigami,” a fourth posted. And another added: “I didn’t even know a free kick was possible inside the box until now!”
