Couple discover 30-year-old time capsule behind fire – then monitor down man who made it

A couple renovating their new home were stunned after finding a 30-year-old time capsule hidden behind their fireplace.

Faye Pulleyn and Adam Brown found a bizarre assortment of items, including some old coins, a key and an ID card for a Michael Whitehead, all stashed away in an empty box of Lambert and Butler cigarettes.

The couple from Stamford, Lincolnshire, also found a handwritten note that read, “If this is found in 30 years from now please find me if I’m alive – hope so.” and another note that added, “Or publish it in Stamford Mercury. Thank you.”

The discoveries continued for the couple as they also found a piece of wood with the words “time goes by so quickly” along with the age “26 and a half” written above Michael’s signature.

Faye, who discovered the time capsule with her partner Adam, said “I loved finding it and thought it was really exciting.”

“It also makes the house feel lived in.”

In an incredible turn of events, the couple contacted their local newspaper and were able to track down Michael, who is now known as Mick, and still lives locally.

Mick, who formerly owned the house, admitted to leaving the notes and time capsule 30 years ago in the 1990s after he bought his cottage on Ryhall Road for £40,000.

Mick, 57, said, “I can’t believe someone found it,”

Mick, who runs his own building firm, met with the couple last week to retrieve his time capsule.

“Every builder does it when they seal things up, kind of like a time capsule.” Mick said.

However, despite Mick having hidden notes and “gifts” at other people’s properties, none have got back to him so far and he noted that the most exotic thing he’s put behind a fireplace was an old Chinese vase the owner no longer wanted.

“I’ve hidden more things than I can remember,” Mick said.

“I’ll be waiting for the lot to show in 50 years.”
