A medical professional has shed light on a “surprising” cause of hair loss that many of us could be guilty of. Contrary to popular belief, not washing your hair frequently enough could actually impede healthy hair growth.
This contradicts the widely accepted notion that over-washing can lead to hair loss. NHS surgeon and internet personality Doctor Karan Rajan, also known as Dr Raj, took to TikTok to elaborate on this.
Responding to another user who was told she didn’t wash her hair enough, he stated: “This might surprise you and I’m ashamed to admit that I used to believe this and you probably did too. There is no evidence linking regular hair washing to hair loss.”
As reported by The Mirror, he added: “In fact scalp hygiene may actually promote healthy hair growth because it can stop the build-up of excess sebum, which can clog the hair follicles and wash away dirt and pollutants, which can contribute to scalp inflammation.”
However, he warned that certain practices related to hair washing and styling could induce hair loss and damage. Dr Raj further explained: “While washing itself doesn’t contribute to hair loss, certain things that you might do during and after washing can contribute to hair damage.
“Using harsh products or strong chemicals that can strip the natural oils leading to dryness and breakage and brittle hair. Excessive heat exposure can weaken the hair strands over time.
“And remember that hair loss isn’t often caused by just one thing. A number of factors can have a say like genetics, diet, stress, hormonal changes.”
However, online advice on hair washing frequency varies. Consultant trichologist Anabel Kingsley told Boots that it hinges on hair type and styling routine, explaining: “It’s totally dependent on your hair type. I recommend people with fine hair shampoo daily.
“This is because those with thinner textures have more oil glands on their scalp, meaning their strands become greasy faster. Those with medium-textured hair should try to shampoo every day to every other day.”
Anabel added: “How often you wash your hair also depends on what you do afterwards. If you heat style every time you shampoo, the damage may outweigh the good. It’s about finding a balance.”
