The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to claimants on six different benefits who own a car. The DWP is encouraging these individuals to maximise their benefits by enrolling in the Motability Scheme.
If you’re receiving a benefit due to a disability or illness that hinders your mobility, you can utilise it to lease a vehicle from the charity, Motability. A wide range of vehicles are available for selection, including cars, mobility scooters, and powered wheelchairs.
However, it’s important to note that you’ll only be paying for the vehicle’s lease – it won’t be your property. If your benefit ceases, the vehicle must be returned.

You’re eligible for a Motability car or vehicle if you’ve been granted the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP) or War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement OR the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Adult Disability Payment or the higher rate of the mobility component of Child Disability Payment.
Motability has some sound advice for those looking to get a new ride, saying: “Different vehicles suit different people, so we’ll help you decide between our vehicle types and any adaptations. We’ll help you make sure you’re making the right choice for you,” reports Birmingham Live.
They also add a financial tip: “We’ll receive your payments straight from your allowance provider, to make paying simple. You might need to top this up with an Advance Payment. You can start applying online if it’s a car or a WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle.”
After you’ve taken your potential new wheels for a spin and made your choice, just pop over to a Motability Scheme dealer to seal the deal. If you’re picking up a car, you’ll collect it from the local dealer, but for other vehicle types, they’ll deliver it right to your doorstep.
Once everything’s sorted, you can hit the road and enjoy your new set of wheels.
