The boxing world is mourning the loss of former three-time world champion Israel Vazquez after he died aged 46 from cancer.
Vazquez, a former WBC super bantamweight champion, hung up his gloves in 2010 with an impressive record of 44-5. He is fondly remembered for his electrifying four-fight series with compatriot Rafael Marquez.
After losing their initial bout, Vazquez triumphed in the next two matches, only to be defeated in the fourth via a third-round knockout. Between 2004 and 2005, Vazquez held the IBF title and from 2005 to 2008, he was the proud holder of the WBC and The Ring titles.

With 32 of his 44 victories achieved by knockout, the Mexican sensation was always a crowd-pleaser whenever he entered the ring. Recently diagnosed with stage four sarcoma, he sadly died from the disease after a brief fight, reports the Mirror.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed the heartbreaking news and paid homage to Vazquez on X, penning: “Israel Vazquez is finally resting in peace. May God give strength and support to his wife, Laura, their children, family, and friends during these difficult times.”
He continued: “Thank you, Israel, for the many great memories you have given us through your actions inside the ring but most importantly outside of it. You are now eternal. Rest in peace, and everything will be all right.”
Vazquez burst onto the professional boxing scene in 1995 at just 17, clocking up nine straight wins before tasting defeat for the first time in his tenth fight. Fast forward nine years, and he snagged his first major world title by besting Jose Luis Valbuena.
Last month, his spouse Laura shared with the Los Angeles Times how Vasquez’s affliction had sapped his strength and impaired his ability to speak. “He can hardly speak and, when he does, he is short of breath. He is very weak,” she said.
“We were told he would have six months to live, but I’m not going to give up. We’re going to get a second opinion. We know there’s still hope.”
Following the announcement, tributes began flooding in. Celebrated boxing coach Freddie Roach said: “Forever a world champion and legend in boxing.
“One of the best boxers I ever had the privilege of working with a world champion. Israel, my friend, may you rest in peace now. My condolences to the Vazquez family and to all those who called Israel their friend.”
