Stars of Gavin and Stacey nicked a raft of bizarre props from the set of the final episode.

They flouted the rules to make sure they had mementos of their time on the hit comedy. Ruth Jones, who plays Nessa, said: “I stole the glazed egg holder from Gwen’s that always sat on the windowsill in her kitchen… the one that’s shaped like a hen!”

Joanna Page, who stars as Stacey, said: “I have definitely snuck some memorabilia home. I have got all of Stacey’s costume from the final episode, all of her shoes and her jewellery. Also, I’ve taken a framed painting home from Stacey and Gwen’s house, and I also took this glass ornamental duck.”

Melanie Walters, who plays Gwen, nicked stuff even though she didn’t like it. She said: “I do have Gwen’s shoes and bags… maybe to donate to a fashion charity. To be honest Gwen’s taste isn’t exactly mine!”

Rob Brydon has also taken many of the outfits he has worn to play Uncle Bryn. He joked: “Keep your eyes on charity auctions near you!”

The cast managed to loot so many things despite props teams trying to stop them. Adrian Scarborough, who plays Pete, added: “The props department behave like the Flying Squad.”

Ruth and co-writer James Corden will host a show on Radio 2 on December 23. The pair will be joined by many of their co-stars for the special broadcast.

Gavin & Stacey’s final episode will air on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One.

Star Matthew Horne, who plays Gavin, said the show’s Christmas special will be “nothing short of a masterpiece”.

The 46-year-old, who plays Gavin Shipman in the series, said the script for the sitcom’s final episode made him laugh and cry, and said the finished product “hasn’t disappointed”.

He said: “I want to say I was nervous about reading the script as it’s always been Ruth’s (Jones) and James’s (Corden) priority to get the script perfect in the first instance, to tell a story the right way.

“And I had no evidence to suggest that this final script wouldn’t adhere to those principles and be anything other than brilliant. I did have a nervous compulsion to read it immediately and my expectations were exceeded.

“It made me laugh, it made me cry and upon completion, I thought it was nothing short of a masterpiece. Not just in terms of an episode of Gavin And Stacey, but frankly any script I’ve ever read.

“I immediately took to our WhatsApp group to say as much. The nerves started upon finishing reading the script in as much as I hoped we could all meet the quality of the script upon shooting it. It hasn’t disappointed.”
