Manchester United outcast Scott McTominay is loving life in Italy with Napoli and is doing so well he’s got a new nickname and even had a pizza named after him.

Scotland international McTominay was sold to the Serie A giants in the summer for £26m, after years of under-appreciation from successive managers – during which he spoke of “toxic” dressing rooms at Old Trafford – despite earning a reputation for scoring big goals in big moments and bagging 10 times under Erik ten Hag last season.

But he has flourished in Italy with his gorgeous girlfriend by his side, with Antonio Conte’s side second in the table ahead of heavy hitters Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus and Lazio. And after their fast start to the campaign, media in Italy have described McTominay as the “new Napoli leader”, with the star mobbed by players and staff alike earlier this month when he scored the only goal of a game against Torino.

A defeat to Lazio on his 28th birthday last Sunday put a dampener on things, but still he has plenty to smile about after proving his worth in Conte’s reworked midfield, which seems to have been done to find a starting spot for the former United man.

And his form hasn’t gone unnoticed, with the Napoli ultras giving him a new nickname “McMaradona” after legendary striker Diego Maradona’s time with the club in the late 1980s and early 90s.

Things are also going well on a personal level, with McTominay’s gorgeous WAG Cam Reading also saying she has “fallen in love with Italy” and has posted plenty of snaps of beautiful Italian scenery since moving there in the summer.

Elsewhere, Mimmo Rossi, the owner of Glasgow restaurant Bella Vita, has been so impressed by McTominay, along with fellow Scottish signing Billy Gilmour, that he has created the GilMcTominay – a tomato-based pizza topped with buffalo mozzarella, haggis and Italian meatballs, a mascarpone sauce, along with a whiskey sauce, which is earning rave reviews from locals.

But above all, new boss Conte is delighted with McTominay’s performances so far this season. He said: “We quietly signed [McTominay] and the club and sporting director Giovanni Manna did a great job at understanding what he could bring to Napoli.

“But the same goes for every new recruit. We’re a team that’s on the up and the growth of a team happens through the steps each individual player must take every week. It is inevitable though that if they ask me to reinforce the squad, I try to pick the best players.

“We did well with Scott because he was not a starter at Manchester United, but I already knew him very well and we worked under the radar to bring him here.

“Of course, everyone is eager to prove themselves and I am glad that we got it right choosing McTominay.”
