Manchester United have been told not to bring Viktor Gyokeres to the club by a former Premier League star because of one key flaw in his play.

The Swedish striker is Europe’s leading goalscorer in 2024 with his stunning exploits at Sporting Lisbon seeing him bag 60 goals for both club and country in the calendar year.

His ridiculous goalscoring record since moving to the Portuguese club from Coventry last year has caught the attention of Premier League suitors and Ruben Amorim‘s arrival at Man United only added fuel to the fire.

Amorim got the best out of Gyokeres during their time together at Sporting with the striker helping fire the club to the Portuguese top-flight title in his first campaign and scoring 26 goals in 24 games this season.

So far the newly-appointed United boss has remained tight-lipped on trying to lure Gyokeres away from his former team, while Arsenal have also been linked with the centre forward.

However, Watford and Premier League icon Troy Deeney believes both clubs would be making a mistake in forking out what would be a huge sum to secure Gyokeres’ services.

Deeney scored 47 Premier League goals across 165 appearances for Watford but isn’t convinced by Gyokeres’ finishing and stressed his belief that the 26-year-old isn’t a ‘natural finisher’.

‘You know when you say something the clip is going to come back in six months,’ Deeney told talkSPORT.

‘I genuinely think he’s a good footballer, he works really hard, all of that. But I don’t think he’s a natural finisher.’

Deeney further went on to explain that Manchester United and Arsenal won’t have a chance of winning the Premier League title if they sign Gyokeres and urged caution when deciding on whether to launch a bid.

‘And again, everyone is going to pull up his goal record, I get that. But I don’t think he takes either of those two to winning the Premier League,’ added Deeney.

‘That’s just my opinion, and if he did, they’d have already bought him,’ the former Watford captain added.

Should United ignore Deeney’s advice and press ahead with their recruitment efforts for Gyokeres then they will need to sell a swathe of players to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations.

Marcus Rashford could be sold in a cut-price deal for just £40m in the January transfer window, while summer recruit Joshua Zirkzee has been touted for an early Old Trafford exit.

The biggest decision would be over the future of young Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund with United paying £72m for him last year and believing the 21-year-old can lead the team’s attack in the long-term.

Hojlund has taken time to convince Amorim that he is up to the task but has now scored six goals across his last five appearances and is expected to start Sunday’s derby against Man City.
