Families finding it hard to cover their energy bills this winter could be eligible for a free payment of up to £300. This financial assistance is part of the government-funded Household Support Fund scheme, first launched by the previous Conservative government in 2021.

The scheme equips local councils with funds to provide cost of living support to households in need. Each council offers its own specific support, which can only be claimed by residents of that area.

For example, Blackpool Council is providing payments of £200 and £300 to households struggling with energy costs. A household can receive a payment of £200 if there are one or two people living in the property, or a payment of £300 if there are three or more occupants.

If eligible, the money will be paid directly to your energy provider and will appear as credit on your bill. According to the council’s website, you can apply for the support if you are: You do not need to be claiming Universal Credit or any other Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits to get this help.

However, you do need to provide proof that you are in financial hardship. Blackpool council states that with your application, you will need to provide your most recent full month bank/building society/savings account statements for all accounts for the applicant and all other adults in your household, reports the Mirror.

These statements need to show all of your transactions and not just the balances. Those in need of support will have to provide a few details: an electricity or gas bill that clearly shows your name, address, the supplier’s name, and your account number. If you’re on a prepayment meter, snap a screenshot or photo from your online supplier account showing your name, address, the supplier’s name, and the pre-pay account number.

Blackpool Council has sent out a stark warning – any application lacking the necessary proof will be outright rejected. Once an application is made, you’ll receive a reference number for your application. It’s important to note that the council believes an expected flood of applications means responses could take “several weeks” before you hear back about your application status.

Those who aren’t in Blackpool may not receive the same payment from their local council. Despite this, other residents should keep their eyes peeled for their local Household Support Scheme, which councils across the board should offer.
