Keely Hodgkinson wins BBC’s SPOTY as darts sensation Luke Littler finishes second

Keely Hodgkinson has been crowned as BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.

Hodgkinson, 22, was Team GB’s golden girl in Paris as she stormed home in the 800m to mark our first Olympic track title since Mo Farah won the 5,000m and 10,000m double at Rio 2016.

And in doing so, Hodgkinson became only the 10th British woman to win athletics gold at the Olympics. In an incredible season, Hodgkinson retained her European 800m title and then set a national 800m record of one minute 54.61 seconds at the London Diamond League.

Reflecting on her season, Hodgkinson told the BBC: “Growing up I always knew I had a talent in the sport. I get the best out of my self when I have something to aim for.

“I took great inspiration from Jessica Ennis-Hill at London 2012. You start to dream into your teenage years… There is a definitely a difference [between silver and gold]. The blonde hair stands out the most! It has been amazing since Paris.

“It is crazy to think that a little girl has watched that and been inspired to get into athletics.”

Hodgkinson beat Luke Littler, who finished 2nd but took home the Young Sports Personality of the Year as a consolation prize, and Joe Root to claim the iconic prize.

Team GB’s golden girl was handed the award by last year’s winner, Mary Earps, as she told the crowd: “I am in a bit of shock. I am more excited for my coach [Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows] as I wouldn’t be here without his guidance.

“This year has been incredible and I achieved everything that I set out to do on the outdoor track.

“I hope you love watching Paris and I wish you all a wonderful evening.”
