More than one in 10 The report warned: “Ignoring simple maintenance tasks like securing a wobbly seat may leave you exposed to preventable dangers in one of the most used rooms of your home. If you think this sounds dramatic, think again – some victims have suffered broken bones, head injuries and long-term complications from what started as a seemingly harmless mishap.”

The study, commissioned by Plumbworld, said most toilet calamities came from slips and falls. It said: “A seat that shifts unexpectedly can lead to a sudden loss of balance. This is particularly dangerous when transitioning from a seated position, which is when most bathroom accidents occur.

“The consequences of such falls can be devastating – fractures, head injuries and back injuries are common outcomes of bathroom-related accidents. In extreme cases, such incidents have led to permanent disability.

“Beyond physical harm, these injuries can lead to prolonged recovery periods, medical expenses and even reduced independence, especially for older individuals.”
