Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is closer than ever before to leaving Old Trafford after new boss Ruben Amorim has ‘come in and put his foot down’ over his attitude
Teddy Sheringham reckons Manchester United flop Marcus Rashford should have been axed from the squad long before now after boss Ruben Amorim dropped him for the Manchester derby.
Rashford trained away from the first team on the morning of the game, before going home to watch United’s 2-1 win over Manchester City on television – and has since said he is “ready for a new challenge and the next steps“, signalling his future exit from the club after being sent home from training on Monday.
The England reject has cut a miserable figure this season following another slump in form. The 27-year-old has scored just seven goals in 24 appearances in all competitions.
In 426 appearances for the club over the past eight years, Rashford has scored 138 goals, including 30 in a single season in 2022-23. He has come in for criticism recently following his trip to the United States during the recent international break.
Sheringham has praised Amorim for being tough on Rashford – and believes it should have happened weeks ago.
Amorim made a big decision by axing both Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the squad that played at the Etihad, blaming subpar behaviour and attitude as he attempts to show his authority as United’s new boss.
And United legend Sheringham told Genting Casino: “It certainly lays the law down, doesn’t it? Only he (Amorim) knows whether it’s the players going towards the exit door or not.
“But I think it’s a fantastic statement. I think it should have been done a long time ago. Rashford’s body language and demeanour have not been great, and that is one thing that Manchester United supporters don’t suffer.
“And he seems to be the only manager that’s come in and put his foot down about it. So well done.”
