Saturday deadline looms to use for Pension Credit and get a winter gasoline fee

Elderly people on low incomes have until this Saturday to make a Pension Credit claim to receive a Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300.

Up to 880,000 could be missing out on more than £3,900 a year on the benefit which allows low-income pensioners to claim costs including fuel and housing.

Only those who successfully claim for the qualifying week of September 16-22 will receive a payment, but claims can be backdated up to three months.

Pensioners no longer receive the Winter Fuel Payment automatically after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’s controversial decision to make the benefit means-tested earlier this year.

You can check if you might be eligible by using the online calculator (gov.uk/pension-credit-calculator) or calling 0800 99 1234.
