Virgil van Dijk has broken his silence on his future

Liverpool‘s Virgil van Dijk has made it clear he’s in no rush to sort out his future at Anfield, despite his contract ticking down.

The skipper revealed there’s been “There is no deadline at all,” for a new deal as he enters the last six months of his current agreement.

With the ability to start negotiations with other clubs from next week, Van Dijk, along with teammates Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, could be part of a big shake-up at Liverpool come summer.

But the Dutch defender is keeping cool, focusing on the job at hand: “I’ll see what the future holds. I focus fully on Leicester.” The Reds are set to face Leicester City on Boxing Day, leading the pack with a game in hand after a stunning display against Tottenham.

Salah’s recent performance, which saw him climb to fourth in Liverpool’s all-time scoring list, didn’t go unnoticed by Van Dijk, who praised the Egyptian: “His numbers speak for themselves.

“He’s a very special athlete. He’s done amazingly for the club and hopefully he can play his best season ever for the club, stay important with his goals and assists.”

“We always need a complete performance from him because all the defensive work that he can put in as well is very important for us as the last line.”

However, when quizzed about Salah’s prospects for the next season, Van Dijk kept it short: “I don’t know,” reports the Mirror.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League table at Christmas for the seventh time, but history shows that only one of those leads has resulted in them winning the title. Despite their significant lead, Van Dijk is cautious, drawing on past experiences.

“We’ve been there, we’ve done it,” he said. “We’ve lost twice in very small margins. The key is to take it game by game.”

He added that being top at Christmas will bring festive cheer to Liverpool fans worldwide, but the real goal is to still be there in May.
