A man has been arrested after four people were run down in the early hours of Christmas morning. The shocking incident occurred at 12.45am this morning (Christmas Day) and has left one people in “life-threatening” condition.
It happened on Shaftesbury Avenue in London, with three others also taken to hospital. Their conditions are unknown, however a 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
No details of what actually happened have been made public, nor have the identities of the man arrested or of the four people now in hospital, although it is thought that it was sparked by a “nightclub altercation”.
Police initially attended after reports were made of a road traffic collision and a car driving on the wrong side, a spokesman confirmed.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy said “Officers responded quickly to this report, working closely with City of London Police to arrest a man within minutes.
“Detectives are quickly progressing enquiries as part of this investigation. It’s believed that the suspect was involved in an altercation at a nightclub prior to getting in his car and mounting the pavement. Several scenes remain in place at the location today. This has been confirmed as an isolated incident which is not terrorism related.”
Met Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them using reference CAD 233 of December 25.
It comes hours after it was confirmed that a 39-year-old man had been shot dead by armed police on Christmas Eve. The horror moment took place in Redditch, Worcestershire last night, West Mercia Police confirmed.
Officers were called to the scene after West Midlands Ambulance Service attended the address in Fownhope Close at around 2pm. No details on why WMAS were there have been given, but “significant concerns” were raised for the safety of a man who was said to have been in possession of a knife.
A police negotiator was then sent it, and attempts were made to resolve the situation by engaging with the man over several hours but – however officials confirmed that this move failed. At approximately 7.40pm on Christmas Eve, the 39-year-old man was shot by armed police. Despite efforts by officers at the scene to save him, he was pronounced dead just after 8pm. The address was said to be empty bar the man at the time.
