Ex-Everton striker Neal Maupay has once again taken aim at his former club on social media.

The French forward compared leaving Everton to Andy Dufresne escaping Shawshank State Prison in the Shawshank Redemption, posting a scene of the character played by Tom Hanks crawling through the sewers to freedom after his departure was confirmed.

Bizarrely, Maupay, who also trolled James Maddison earlier this year, is still technically an Everton player, with him having joined Marseille on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy. However, that has not stopped him from once again taking a shot at the Toffees. Taking to X just hours after the Toffees lost to Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park 2-0, Maupay wrote: “Whenever I’m having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile.”

And while the comment has not gone down well with Everton supporters on social media, there were some football fans who found the Frenchman’s jibe at the Toffees hilarious.

“Craig Dawson scored more goals for us than you did mate,” wrote on Everton fan on X. Another added: “Huge two goals this season mate. Ballon D’or awaits.”

A third said: “I don’t think there’s a more egotistical player with such little skill as this dude. Very punchable face too.” And a fourth wrote: “Whenever I have a bad game I watch your highlights to remind myself I could be worse.”

However, on the flip side, there were plenty in hysterics following Maupay’s latest taunt. “One of the greatest windup merchants to ever play the game,” wrote one football fan.

A second added: “I thought this was a parody account for a second but it’s actually his real account.” A third said: “Sums up the Farhad Moshiri era that a player still contracted to Everton is tweeting this.”
