BREAKING Former Newcastle star Michael Newberry dies aged 27 as membership launch assertion

Former Newcastle United defender Michael Newberry has died aged just 27.

Once touted as one of the Premier League club’s shining stars, homegrown prospect Newberry clinched the “Wor Jackie trophy” back in 2016, marking him out as a young talent of note, after having joined the Magpies at the tender age of 11.

Newberry pipped current Newcastle star Sean Longstaff to the award, but sadly never made a first-team appearance in black and white, as his rise was halted by successive long-term injuries, before he was released by his boyhood club.

He had represented Northern Ireland at Under-21 level and also played abroad with Icelandic team Vikingur Olafsvik in 2018, before forging a successful career with NIFL Premiership side Linfield, based in Belfast.

Newberry was a key player for Linfield, where he enjoyed a successful three-year stint that included clinching two Irish Premiership titles, before he joined his current club, Belfast-based Cliftonville, in the summer.

Both Cliftonville and Linfield have postponed their matches against Dungannon Swifts and Larne as a mark of respect. Cliftonville released a heartfelt statement in tribute to their player.

The statement read: “Our condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played with during his career, and fans who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news. Rest in peace, Newbs.”

Linfield also expressed their sorrow, reports the Mirror. A club statement read: “Linfield FC is devastated to learn of the sudden passing of our former player, Michael Newberry.

“Linfield has agreed with NIFL that tonight’s Premiership game against Larne should be postponed. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the club are with Michael’s family and friends at this very sad time.”

In addition, the NI Football League spokesperson shared their condolences. A statement read: “Everyone connected with the NI Football League pass on our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time.
