The Glasgow native has gone from strength to strength after winning a title with her tag team partner and fellow Scot Alba Fyre back and June – and now is set to perform for more fans
WWE superstar Isla Dawn has named the two family members who refuse to watch her perform despite winning titles in front of sold out arena crowds. The 30-year-old wrestler, whose real name is Courtney Stewart, is now set to perform for millions of more people after the WWE signed a landmark deal with Netflix.
The Glasgow native revealed that despite her gaining fans on professional wrestling world stage her two nephews, who call her Auntie Coco, fast forward through her bouts when she appears on TV. “They refuse to watch me,” Isla said.
“They’ll watch anyone on it but me! Auntie Coco is my name with them, and they’ll just skip through my matches and go onto a battle royal or whatever’s next.”
The wrestler, who performs alongside fellow Scot Alba Fyre as the Unholy Union, grew up performing in dance and acting classes in Balornock in the north of Glasgow and only turned to wrestling much later in life. However, she added that the huge personalities of the squared circle such a Trish Stratus and Lita did grab her attention in the early 2000s.
She said: “Although I loved the matches, it was more about the moments in-between and the characters. It’s why acting was so closely linked to wrestling for me.
“It’s performance, it’s characters, it’s big personalities – I got drawn into that, losing myself in that world.” Back in June, Isla and her tage team partner Alba Fyre, real name Kayleigh Kerr, won the title at WWE Clash At The Castle: Glasgow.
Isla said the it was “extra special” to win in her home town. “To win a title in WWE is what everyone wants, it’s real dream come true stuff, but getting to do it in Glasgow was extra special,” she said.
“I remember when we walked out for our entrance and got in the ring, I could see my family sitting in the second row. That was such a nice moment as they don’t get to see me wrestle that often. I think the last time my mum saw me would have been about 2019.
“It was like the whole of the Hydro were behind us. My sister started crying when we won and my brother-in-law took a photo of her, so that’s the family WhatsApp group chat’s cover photo now!”
And the fiery Scot is set to perform for even more wrestling fans after WWE and Netflix signed a 10-year deal though to be worth more than £5billion. Starting on January 7, Monday Night Raw will be streamed live on the the streaming platform at 1am UK time.
The show will take place at the sold-out Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, with the legendary John Cena set to make his first appearance on his year-long retirement tour, CM Punk will also appear, while singer Travis Scott will unveil the new Raw theme song live on the show.
