While new year resolutions may see you giving cheese a wide birth, boffins claim Camembert can help ‘improve cognitive decline’ and assist in maintaining health blood levels
Forget the new years diet – Camembert is good for you and can help ward off Alzheimer’s. Science boffins say you don’t have to give up the fondues from Christmas just yet – as a super ingredient in the festive favourite could help you stay healthy in old age.
A fatty acid found in the melty goodness was tested in mice and found that it can “improve cognitive decline.” Myristamide, a molecule present in Camembert cheese, improved cognitive decline helping to improve memory and stop old age loss.
A report found: “The increasing prevalence of dementia and cognitive decline is one of the major general health concerns, especially considering that the global population is growing and aging.
“When orally administered Camembert cheese improved the cognitive decline induced by a high-fat diet.
“The ideal approach to preventing cognitive decline is the regular consumption of the proper nutrients derived from everyday foods. For example, the intake of dairy products has been reported to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.”
Boffins tested 11 week old mice with some put on a classic rodent diet and others on the high fat Camembert cheese menu.
The mice on the cheese diet showed more memory recognition and a healthier blood level, also associated in humans with Diabetes.
Scientists stated in the report published in Science Direct that thanks to the fatty amino acids and the process of fermentation found in Camembert, they could conclude the cheese could be deemed a superfood for fighting age related memory conditions.
In October, a 63-year-old man was arrested, suspected of stealing £300,000 worth of Neal’s Yard cheese. It’s thought the man managed to make off with 22 tonnes of cheddar after posing as a major French retailer.
It is unknown where the cheese may have headed. One cheesemaker, whose cheese was stolen as part of the con, believes it may be heading to Russia.
