Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool has been affected by the heavy snowfall on Merseyside – and while the game has been given the green light, the snow isn’t set to stop
Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool will be affected by heavy snowfall on Sunday (January 5).
The UK was covered with a blanket of white as snowfall threatened to postpone the Red Devils journey to Anfield. However, after two safety meetings, it was decided the game was OK to go ahead.
According to BBC weather, however, it will be a chilly afternoon with temperatures hovering above freezing with sleet expected through the evening. There is also a yellow weather warning due to the snow.
The warning reads: “Heavy snow, and some freezing rain in places, may cause some disruption over the weekend. There is a chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.
“There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off. A small chance of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces. There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.”
The sleet is due to stop at 7am on Monday (January 6).
However, the game will go ahead with Liverpool confirming in a statement: “Today’s fixture against Manchester United will go ahead as planned. Two safety meetings were held earlier to assess the weather and travel conditions.
“We thank everyone involved in helping us to get this game on today. If you’re travelling to Anfield then please take extra care. We look forward to seeing you there.”
And the Red Devils added: “Following a second safety meeting, it has been decided that today’s match between Manchester United and Liverpool will go ahead.
“There have been snowfall and weather warnings across the North West on Sunday but it has been deemed safe for fans to attend the 16:30 GMT kick-off. Take care if you are travelling to Merseyside today, Reds.”
