Man charged with serving to escaped prisoner Daniel Khalife after inmate fled HMP Wandsworth

A man has been charged with assisting Daniel Khalife after he escaped from HMP Wandsworth.

Police have charged Imran Chowdury, 25, from Chingford, east London of assisting the former soldier after he fled the prison in September 2023.

Chowdury was arrested by the Met in January 2024 and was charged in December via post with one count of assisting an escaped prisoner.

He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 7 January.

No further action was taken against a 25-year-old woman who was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender in February 2024, the force added.

Khalife, 23, was found to have escaped the prison, triggering a nationwide manhunt, at court in November.

He was eventually tracked down and arrested on a canal towpath just a few miles from the jail.

Born in Westminster, Khalife and his twin sister were raised singlehandedly by their mother Farnaz, 48, a nurse from Iran.

Khalife had joined the Army at 16, but was left ‘devastated’ when he was told halfway through his training that his Iranian heritage would stop him getting the security clearance required to work in intelligence at ‘the sharp end’ of the military.

He began passing official secrets to Iranian agents soon afterwards.

By the age of 19, he had a NATO level of security clearance, which is the second highest level of security clearance enabling him to see secret material.

After being charged over his actions and remanded in prison, Khalife escaped by tying himself to the underbelly of a food truck while working in the kitchen.

In a blunder, prison officers let the lorry leave Wandsworth even after the alarm had been raised about a missing inmate.

CCTV footage showed an officer waving at the unsuspecting driver as he left at 7.32am.

Eleven minutes later when the lorry stopped at a dual carriageway less than a mile away, Khalife rolled out from underneath and slunk off.

He was on the run for four days after using prison trousers to fasten himself to the vehicle and leave the site.

It is unclear what role Chowdury is accused of playing after Khalife’s escape.
