Arne Slot insists he would not want January signings as Liverpool boss presents his verdict of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s efficiency in 2-2 draw with Man United

  • Liverpool have only made two significant acquisitions under new boss Arne Slot
  • Giorgi Mamardashvili will join Liverpool at the end of the season on a £33m deal
  • LISTEN to It’s All Kicking Off! Jack Grealish won’t be allowed to drift at Man City… he’ll be sold this summer if things don’t change

Arne Slot is prepared to let the January window pass without Liverpool making a new signing as he put his trust in his current squad to deliver glory.

Liverpool have only done two significant pieces of business since Slot became their new head coach last summer, signing Federico Chiesa for £10million and securing a £33m deal for Georgia international goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to arrive at the end of this campaign.

There is a thirst amongst supporters to see Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owners, back Slot financially to give the squad a lift as they head into the defining point of the season when the objective will be to win the Premier League.

But Slot, who is preparing for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final with Tottenham, is not actively looking for new blood to arrive and, crucially, thinks the current roster has enough depth and talent to help meet their objectives.

‘It would be a bit weird, after what I told you in the summer, if I said we are very happy with the team and tell you something different now,’ said Slot, who hopes key midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai will have recovered from illness to travel to London.

‘But this club has always looked at the market. We did that with the goalkeeper we don’t have now (Mamardashvili) but the team is in a good place. Unfortunately, Joe Gomez is injured so we go from four centre-backs to three but, otherwise, I am very happy with the team.’

Arne Slot suggested that Liverpool may not make any additions to the squad in January

His side have already completed a £33million deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili who joins next summer

Slot remained diplomatic when asked about Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future once again

Slot is likely to play a strong team at Tottenham, as Liverpool continue their quest to retain the trophy they have won a record 10 times, but whether it will be Conor Bradley or Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back remains to be seen.

Alexander-Arnold’s performance in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United has been heavily scrutinised, a situation exacerbated by Real Madrid’s pursuit of him and the fact he has not committed to a new deal. Slot, again, was asked about his right-back’s future and showed great diplomacy.

‘I think we were all disappointed – not only Trent – by the way we played,’ said Slot. ‘First of all by the result, parts of the game we could be quite satisfied with, others we were not happy with.

‘That was not only Trent, he didn’t play his best but not the first time in his life he didn’t play the best game of his career. He has played so, so, so many games well.

‘These players know if you play 50-60 games in a season once in a while you don’t have your best performance.

‘Apart from the team not being the best it was again an eventful game from Liverpool. I got many text messages from people saying what a game again, unbelievable the last 10 minutes both teams playing for a win and that is part of our job to make it an eventful game.’
